Teacher job in Cardiff. Thirty-seven hours per week. Prison environment. £16.00 per hour. 1 year duration.

Your new organisation
This opportunity is working within the learning and skills department of Cardiff Prison. The department offers a range of courses and vocational qualifications for offenders serving their sentences and preparing for release. The department plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of offenders and reducing re-offending rates. Last year the department taught 4,500 inmates.

Your new role
You will work as part of a department of education professionals responsible for offering a range of courses to eligible offenders. The role is a full-time Monday to Thursday, 7.30am -4.30pm and 7.30 am to 12.30pm on Fridays. You will be responsible for teaching a range of courses to small groups of prisoners including essential skills, ICT and ESOL. This role will include planning, delivery and administration of courses. You will be covering for a permanent member of staff whom will be on maternity leave from June.

What you'll need to succeed
You will hold a PGCE or PCET teaching qualification and be registered with or prepared to register with the Education Workforce Council. You will have previous experience of teaching either children or adults and be prepared to work within a prison environment. You will have a humanistic approach to teaching, be able to establish firm boundaries with learners and be assertive. You must share a commitment to safeguarding and be prepared to apply for a DBS check. You must also be prepared to undergo a security vetting process required of all staff working within a prison environment. You must have experience in teaching Essential Skills, including basic maths and basic English. ESOL is desirable but not necessary to be eligible for the role.

HMP Cardiff use a pool of Hays supply teachers for cover work between all South Wales Prisons, so there will be work available after you have finished your year of teaching.
