We think this is an opportunity that might just be too good to miss …
Stratford School Academy is ambitious: we are expanding and have new buildings; we have improved our teacher workforce both in terms of readiness and capacity and our ‘mini school’ approach is innovative. We have asked ourselves: what is an ambitious but potentially achievable academic target that, if we did achieve it, would allow us to say with confidence that we are providing our pupils with a top quality education? One simple answer would be to see 50% of our pupils achieving Maths and English GCSEs at Grade 5 or above, for our attainment grade to be above grade 5 and our Progress 8 score to be 0.5 or better. This summer we managed an average attainment grade of 5. 50% Maths and English at Grade 5 or better is looking like a bit of a challenge in the short term but we are on the right track.

We have a very clear approach to our work which is to focus our efforts on what educational research (as opposed to fashion) tells us really makes a difference to pupil outcomes. This is as true of our approach to pastoral work as it is to our curriculum. So we are heavily influenced by the work of educationalists such as John Hattie and Vivienne Robinson. Our current mantra is extending systematic shared practice. It’s an approach that means that, as a school we progressively accumulate professional knowledge so we are very good at developing our teachers.

Between 2013 and 2015 Stratford School Academy was rebuilt, redeveloped and expanded through the Priority Schools Building Programme. We now have two brand new buildings each for 750 pupils. In September 2015 we admitted our first 300 strong Year 7 cohort and in September 2019 we will reach our full capacity of 1500 pupils. We have not gone for the usual Upper/Lower School split but instead operate two parallel ‘mini schools’ each educating pupils from Year 7 to 11.

Our Upton Lane mini school incorporates a Resource Provision for up to twenty children with Autism and our Grosvenor Road mini school will develop a complementary specialism in teaching pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs. The emphasis is on parallel: two identical schools running side by side - it should make do difference to a pupil which mini school they go to. In practice this means making explicit through systems, protocols and routines, the institutional knowledge that in many schools is tacit.
For pupils to achieve the very best academic results they must be in a position to benefit from the good teaching we provide. As in most schools, all most of our pupils need is good teaching but, again like most schools, we have some for whom that isn’t enough. Our Heads of House have a key role in reaching these pupils that simple good teaching can’t.

We organise our pupils into six parallel Houses (3 at each mini school) each compromised of vertical tutor groups. This means Heads of House work together (systematic shared practice) and, year on year, expand and deepen their knowledge and understanding of primary transition, options, post 16- progression and, most importantly, how to reach the pupils that simple good teaching can’t. Everyone benefits. To carry out their work each Head of House is assisted by a House behaviour and attendance lead teachers.
What are we looking for? Heads of House here are managers: they allocate work to and supervise the work of their teams, whether that is in the role of form tutor or lead teacher. What we don’t want our Heads of House to be are uber mentors.

So we are looking for someone who wants to maximise the number of pupils in their charge who behave well enough to benefit from our good teaching and to do this by running a team and making sure that each and every one in the team does what they should do and to a high standard. One way of looking at success would be this: you can plan your day and you do not have to (very often) crisis manage because you have got your House, its pupils and its teachers, all doing what they should be doing.

You will also be a classroom teacher and you will have to demonstrate that you can teach to a high standard, are ready to coach others and have the desire to improve.

If you think this might be the job for you then you should come in and meet us, see the building, hear more about what we do and how we do it, preferably before you complete an application form.
