At Smile, we are currently working with a school that has a Residential setting attached. The home adopts a structured approach to the day with opportunities for the service users to make choices and also take part in physical activities.

The approach?

The residential curriculum enables the young person to be taught independent skills which can be made into smaller tasks with the aim of them participating more fully in life. The young person is able to achieve small successes and build on their achievements over a period of time until they are confident completing tasks on their own e.g. washing their hair. The young person benefits from increased confidence and self-esteem.?All young people have the benefit of socialising with others, making friends and taking part in activities according to their interests and abilities.

The whole atmosphere at the home is one of assurance and confidence where a young person?s efforts are celebrated and acknowledged. Frequent praise is given and if any criticism is necessary it is used in a constructive manner, which provides positive alternatives. We strive to give more meaning to the environment in which young people with ASD live and to help them to lead happy, meaningful lives and this prepares them for independent adult life as possible.

The Focus

The focus of the residental setting is to promote the development of social behaviors, independence, and personal skills. The setting offers opportunities to practice all personal skills within the settings. They provide care with a strong focus on the importance of privacy, dignity, rights, and choices in a comfortable, homely, stimulating and safe environment.

Values?

Our aim is that young people with ASD achieve an enhanced degree of emotional stability through individualised care packages and target setting and providing support to help the young people lead fulfilling, happy, meaningful lives and prepare them for an independent adult life. You will be?working in partnership with young people, parents, carers, colleagues within education as well as social workers and health and employment/training services to achieve the plans that promote the best possible outcomes for those based in the setting. To ensure the support staff provide a safe, secure, structured, positive and stimulating environment that promotes improved life chances and support and guide those accommodated at the service.

The activities on offer are tailored to the young people?s interests both on site and within the community. all staff provide appropriate supervision and observe and monitor the differences amongst the young people and ensure that their safety and wellbeing is maintained throughout their interactions with other young people.
