I feel that my career is definitely as a teacher and I would like to broaden my experience on this area in order to further develop my skills. I think that is the main reason why I came to U.K. I know I can bring some added value to this activity but I also want to learn new methods and ways of thinking in U.K. schools. I would like to build a career in this country as a teacher, but I realise I have much more to learn.
As a philosophy teacher I have the ability to teach not only philosophy but also sociology, psychology, politics, religious education, citizenship, art, history of arts, anthropology, ethics, social studies, human society, environment, and all kinds of human studies. As a Portuguese citizen and a university graduate I also have the ability to teach the Portuguese language at it`s middle level.
I think teaching should not be only the classical relation where the teacher speaks and the students listen. Overall, I think it should be an interactive relationship with the dialogue and individual/group investigation as the primary tools. The students should see in the teacher someone who is there to help them, explain them all their questions but mainly someone to whom they could trust, a friend. The teaching methods should be different when the students have different needs and backgrounds. I understand that could be a task sometimes difficult to do but it is our job trying to serve the education the better we can.
As a teacher I will always respect and follow the school curriculum lines, methods and rules as well I will always try to improve my work and adapt myself to the individual student needs, community and different situations.
I finished my philosophy course by June 2006. I have a BEd Philosophy degree. My course curriculum is composed by four University years and one year of training period which I had on a secondary public school as a first time education professional.
I taught philosophy to year 10 and year 11. It was my first experience and I will never forget it. I loved getting in practice all the knowledge I have learned at the university, and I think I established a really beautiful relationship with my students.
I worked a lot and I spent most of my free time on extra curricular activities but I did it on my free will. I loved every minute of my trainee year and the students marks were excellent.
I taught philosophy to year 10 and year 11 and psychology to year 11..
I think I am able to perform the teacher role with success in any school of the U.K. because overall I am a team player. I am sociable and mature and I respect the other professionals and students opinions. I believe each member of a school community has something to give and is from the work as a group that fantastic and perfect projects are possible to happen in a school.
I know I am able to teach any kind of humanities subject but the main areas I know I can have more success are: Psychology, Sociology, History, Religious Education, Citizenship, Art, PSHE and Philosophy for Children.
